Where to Stay for an Iceland Glacier Tour

Where you sleep decides which glacier you can reach before breakfast. The Vatnajökull hikes meet hours from the capital, while the Sólheimajökull and Langjökull days run from Reykjavík. Match the bed to the base, then weigh the Iceland glacier ticket prices.

Stay near the base, not the city

If your tour is on Vatnajökull, you meet the guide at Skaftafell or at the lagoon, not in Reykjavík. The operators put the drive at 4.5 to 5 hours from the capital, and one gives 327 km. That is too far to drive on the morning of a hike.

The bases also start on time. Several ask you to arrive 20 minutes early, because they fit your boots and crampons before the start. Sleep within an hour or so of your meeting point, and you arrive awake.

The Skaftafell campsite

The one place to sleep the park runs itself is the campsite at Skaftafell, next to the visitor centre and the car park where several hikes meet. It is open all year. Pitches cannot be reserved, so you turn up and find one.

In winter you are camping beside an ice cap, so bring a sleeping system rated for it. Skaftafellsstofa, the visitor centre, can tell you what the night will bring.

Öræfi and Freysnes

Öræfi is the district around Skaftafell, postcode 785, and most of the Vatnajökull bases are in it. The Tröll base sits west of Hofgarður at Hof. Another hike meets at the gas station at Freysnes, beside a black truck to the right of the building, with restrooms and free parking. The station opens at 09:00.

Sleeping in Öræfi puts you minutes from these meeting points, and the morning drive is short enough to do in the dark. Book early for the summer months, the park’s busiest.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 70 km west

Kirkjubæjarklaustur is the nearest town to the west, 70 km from Skaftafell by the park’s own figure. If you are driving east from Reykjavík, it is the natural last stop before the bases. Sleep there, and you have about 70 km of Route 1 left in the morning.

It also works as the halfway night between the capital and the ice. You can see the South Coast waterfalls on the drive out, sleep, then hike the next day.

Höfn, 130 km east

Höfn is the nearest town to the east, 130 km from Skaftafell. Arctic Adventures puts the drive from there to its Skaftafell meeting point at about 1.5 hours. The lagoon sits between the two, so a night in Höfn suits a cave or kayak tour that starts at Jökulsárlón.

It suits you best if you are driving the ring road clockwise, from the east. Allow for winter conditions on the road: the park advises suitable winter tyres in that season.

For Sólheimajökull and Langjökull, Reykjavík works

The other two glaciers are day trips. Sólheimajökull is about two hours from the capital, 165 km, and the South Coast hike days collect you from Reykjavík bus stops. For Langjökull, the snowmobile coach reaches the base at Húsafell in about 1 hour 40 minutes.

If you drive yourself, the Sólheimajökull hikes also meet at the glacier car park, postcode 221 Vík. The Geysir snowmobile meets on the Golden Circle and takes a super truck to its base camp. Both work from a Reykjavík bed.
