Two answers matter more than the rest. First, there is no ticket to a glacier: you pay for a guide, and the only charge at the door is the park’s parking fee at Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón. Second, the glacier you can reach depends on where you start, because a day from Reykjavík gets you to Sólheimajökull or Langjökull while the Vatnajökull hikes and caves meet hours to the east.

Do I need a ticket to visit an Iceland glacier?
No. Nobody sells admission to a glacier in Iceland: the tour you book is the ticket, and it buys the guide, the gear and sometimes the drive. The one charge at the door is the national park's parking fee at Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón, 1,110 ISK for a car, paid online or at the machines.
Can I walk on an Iceland glacier without a guide?
The national park tells you to go onto the ice with a guide who has glacier experience. Crevasses can run about 30 metres deep, and the surface changes from week to week. Without a guide you can still walk to the ice edge on the marked trails and look.
Which glacier can I reach on a day trip from Reykjavík?

The national park has never published fixed dates, and in 2024 it barred visits to ice caves until 30 October because the ice was unsafe. Can I see an ice cave in summer?
Not on the natural-cave tours here: the caves form and are judged safe in the cold months only. In summer, book a glacier hike instead. Several hikes pass crevasses and small ice channels, which is the nearest thing the season offers.

It depends on the operator and the activity. The youngest hikes take children from 8, one ice cave from 10, ice climbing from 12 and the longer hikes and caves from 14. Snowmobile passengers start at 5 to 8, and a sightseeing day takes children from 2.
What should I wear on an Iceland glacier hike?
Warm layers under a waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a hat and boots with ankle support. Most Skaftafell and Sólheimajökull bases rent boots, jackets and trousers, at 1,750 ISK each on the Tröll hikes. The crampons, harness and helmet come with the fare.
Do I need a driving licence for a snowmobile?
Yes, to drive one: every snowmobile listing asks for a valid driver's licence. Riders share a machine two to one, so a passenger without a licence can still go. A single rider pays a supplement.
Can I cancel an Iceland glacier tour?
Yes. Every tour listed here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts. Inside 24 hours the fare is usually lost, so check the start time on your confirmation, not the day.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Most glacier operators run in all or most weather and ask you to dress for it. Wind can still stop part of a day: one traveller's kayak leg was called off and the hike moved to the next morning. If the operator cancels, ask for a new date or your money back.
How long are you on the ice on an Iceland glacier tour?

Where do Skaftafell glacier tours meet?

What is Jökulsárlón?

Is Skaftafellsstofa open all year?

Can I camp at Skaftafell?
Yes, all year. Pitches cannot be reserved, and the park charges ISK 2,800 per person per night for ages 17 to 66, ISK 2,300 for 67 and over, and nothing for 16 and under with an adult.
What if my shoe size is below EU 35?
Arctic Adventures' glacier crampons fit shoe sizes EU 35 to 50 only, and a guest outside that range cannot join its hikes. Other operators do not publish a range, so ask before you book for a small child or a very large foot.
Is a glacier tour wheelchair accessible?
No. Every listing that answers the question says it is not, and the rest say nothing. The shore at Jökulsárlón and the car-park viewpoints are the way to see the ice without walking on it.
Can I go glacier hiking when pregnant or with back problems?
Several operators say their hikes are not recommended for pregnant travellers or for anyone with back problems. The walk-in, the crampons and the uneven ice are the reason. A lagoon boat ride from the shore is the gentler way onto the water.
What is the difference between a glacier walk and a glacier hike?
Nothing consistent: operators use both words for the same product. Read the duration and the time on the ice instead. Some walks are three-hour hikes and some hikes are gentle strolls in crampons.
Does a glacier tour from Reykjavík include pickup?
It depends on the listing. Some collect you from set bus stops, some from hotels, one from the bus terminal only, and some hotels in the centre cannot be reached by bus. Each card says where the day starts.
Is food included on a glacier tour?
Rarely. A few Tröll hikes include coffee and chocolate, and the long days stop at a restaurant where you buy lunch. Bring water and a snack for the ice.
What is the amphibian boat on Jökulsárlón?
A boat that drives off the shore into the lagoon and sails among the icebergs. On the lagoon day from Reykjavík the ride lasts about 30 minutes and the ticket is in the fare. You do not walk on a glacier on that day.
What is the difference between Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón?
They are two glacier lagoons 10 km apart on the same outwash plain. Fjallsárlón sits in front of Fjallsjökull, is smaller, and the park notes fewer crowds there. Both have toilets by the car park and guided trips on the water.

Yes. Vatnajökull has lost more than 15% of its volume in the last century, and the park says Iceland's glaciers could lose half their volume by 2100. The lagoons you visit exist because the ice has retreated since the 1930s.
