Glacier tours in Iceland meet at a car park, a gas station or a bus stop, never at a gate. This map puts every meeting point in one place. Find the base nearest your bed first, then compare Iceland glacier ticket prices.

The three glaciers on one map

The tours here reach three glaciers. Vatnajökull, the largest, is in the south-east, and its hikes and caves start from bases around Skaftafell or at the lagoon. You need to be in the area the night before. Sólheimajökull is on the south coast, about two hours from the capital. Langjökull is inland, reached from the Golden Circle or from Húsafell in the west.

The Skaftafell bases

Five meeting points sit within a short drive of each other in Öræfi. Check which one is yours on the listing; they are not interchangeable. The gas station at Freysnes is one of them, and so is Skaftafellsstofa, the park’s visitor centre.

The national park car park

The Arctic Adventures booking hut, off Route 1 on road 998. Its longer hikes, the ice climb and its ice cave start here, with a 4x4 bus to the foot of the glacier.

Beside the visitor centre

The Icelandic Mountain Guides base camp stands next to the visitor centre. Its natural ice cave starts here. Arrive 20 minutes early.

The Tröll base at Hof

West of Hofgarður, postcode 785, with free parking. The three-hour hike, the ice climb and the ice cave start here. Arrive 20 minutes early.

The airfield

The car park at Flugvallarvegur 3, 785 Öræfi. Look for the Crystal Cave Tours logo. The lowest fare on the ice starts here.

The gas station

The black truck to the right of the station building, free parking, restrooms. A 4x4 takes you to the glacier from here.

Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón

East of Skaftafell, the two lagoons have their own meeting points. The kayak combination meets at the Jökulsárlón car park, at the kayak and Tröll huts. The Jökulsárlón ice cave meets there too and drives about 30 minutes to the cave.

The hike and iceberg boat meets at Fjallsárlón, 10 km west of the main lagoon, at the reception building next to Frost Restaurant. The park puts toilets at both car parks and charges its regional parking fee at the lagoon. None of these tours includes a transfer from Reykjavík.

The Sólheimajökull car park

If you drive to Sólheimajökull yourself, you meet your guide at the glacier car park, postcode 221 Vík. Tröll Expeditions uses a marked trailer, and Arctic Adventures a yellow bus. Arrive 20 minutes early for the Tröll hike.

From the car park, the walk to the ice is short, which is why this glacier suits a first hike. The Arctic Adventures climb can also collect you in Reykjavík, on a dearer option that adds the two waterfalls on the way.

Geysir and Húsafell for Langjökull

Langjökull has two ways up. The Geysir snowmobile meets behind the Geysir visitor centre on the Golden Circle, at 64°18′31.7″N 20°18′07.0″W, by the Arctic Adventures sign. Arrive 15 minutes before departure. A super truck takes about 50 minutes to the base camp.

The other route runs from Húsafell, in the west. The coach from Reykjavík takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, you collect overalls, helmet and gloves, and a super jeep carries you to the edge of the ice. The Golden Circle day reaches the same ice cap by coach from the capital.

Reykjavík pickups and bus stops

The day trips collect you in the capital, but not all from your door. Read the pickup line on your listing carefully.

The South Coast hike day: Designated bus stops in Reykjavík; some hotels cannot be reached by bus.

The sightseeing day: Bus Stop 12 Höfðatorg, or listed hotels, within 30 minutes of departure.
The Golden Circle snowmobile: The BSÍ bus terminal; hotel pickup is not included.
The Húsafell snowmobile: Reykjavík bus stops, 08:00 to 08:30 or 10:30 to 11:00.
The lagoon boat day: Hotel pickup, with a meeting point for the centre.

If your hotel is on a street the coaches cannot reach, you walk to the nearest numbered stop. Find it the evening before, not at 07:45.

Drive times the operators publish

These are the operators’ and the park’s own figures. None of them gives a distance between Skaftafell and the lagoon, so neither do we. For the nearest towns, the park puts Kirkjubæjarklaustur 70 km west of Skaftafell and Höfn 130 km east.

Where do Skaftafell glacier tours meet?

At one of several bases in Öræfi: the national park car park at Skaftafell, the visitor centre, Skaftafell airfield, the gas station at Freysnes or the Tröll base at Hof. Each card says which. Arrive 20 minutes early; several operators ask for it.

How far is Skaftafell from Reykjavík?

The operators give 4.5 to 5 hours by car, and one puts it at 327 km. Most people who hike there split the ring-road drive or sleep nearby the night before. The tours meet at the base, not in the city.

Where is the Tröll base at Skaftafell?

West of Hofgarður at Hof, postcode 785, with free parking. Its ice cave, ice-climbing and three-hour hikes all meet there. Arrive 20 minutes early for the gear.

Where do the lagoon tours meet?

The kayak combination and the ice cave meet at the Jökulsárlón car park. The hike and iceberg boat meets at the smaller lagoon to the west, at the reception next to Frost Restaurant.

Where do the snowmobile tours meet?

The Geysir tour meets in the car park behind the Geysir visitor centre, with no transfer from Reykjavík. The Golden Circle day leaves from the BSÍ bus terminal, and the Húsafell day collects you from Reykjavík bus stops.

Does a glacier tour from Reykjavík include pickup?

It depends on the listing. Some collect you from set bus stops, some from hotels, one from the bus terminal only, and some hotels in the centre cannot be reached by bus. Each card says where the day starts.
