What $337 buys: a guide, a seat and an hour on the ice
Langjökull has no gate and no ticket. The fare is the tour: the coach from Reykjavík, the driver-guide, the snowmobile, and the overalls, helmet and gloves that keep you warm at the top. The snowmobile is shared by two riders; if you want your own machine, choose the single-rider option when you book.
You take the controls or ride as a passenger. Jeff found it fun and easy to pick up, and Sarah, one of two fit friends over sixty, came away with a sense of achievement after a first ride. Bring your driving licence if you want to drive: it is the one thing on the packing list you cannot borrow at the glacier.
The ice cap: flat, white and wide open
This is a different glacier from the ones you hike. Langjökull is an ice cap, broad and snow-covered, so the ride is across an open white plateau rather than through crevasses and ridges. The guide leads and picks the line. Helene rode on a day of rain and found the short walk from the vehicle to the snowmobiles slippery on wet ice; wear shoes with grip for those few minutes.
The weather decides the ride. The glacier section can be cancelled after the coach has left Reykjavík if conditions turn, and if it is, you receive a full refund. The month-by-month weather shows what the highlands can do.
The Golden Circle stops, and how long you get
The coach runs through Þingvellir National Park, then to the geyser field, where the spouts throw water up to 30 metres, then to Gullfoss, where the Hvítá drops into a canyon 32 metres deep. After the ride you stop at the waterfall again for a short break before the drive back. Ella found about 30 minutes at the geyser and the falls felt short, and still called the snowmobile the part that delivered; the guide’s commentary filled four or five hours of driving.
If the Golden Circle is the point of your day and the ice is a bonus, this is still the most efficient way to do both. If the ice is the point, the Langjökull snowmobile trip from Reykjavík gives you the same hour on a snowmobile in six hours rather than ten, for $265.

Book this if
You have one day, no car and two wishes: the Golden Circle and something you cannot do at home. It suits couples and friends who will share a snowmobile, and families with children from five, one child per adult. You do not need to be fit to ride; you need a licence to drive.
Book something else if
You want more time on the ice and less on the coach: the Langjökull snowmobile trip leaves Reykjavík for Húsafell and caps its group at 14, for $265. Lunch is not in the fare, but you can buy it at one of the stops. The single-rider option is booked as its own option, not added at the glacier. Hotel pickup is excluded, so the coach leaves from the BSÍ terminal.
The BSÍ bus terminal, and getting there yourself
You board at the BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavík. Hotel pickup is not in the fare, so walk, take a taxi or a city bus to the terminal and leave time to find the right coach. The meeting point can vary with the option you book, so check your confirmation for the exact spot.
The day ends back in Reykjavík. The ride is about 45 minutes to the first stop and about an hour and a half back from the waterfall at the end. The meeting-point map shows where each glacier tour starts, from the city to the far east.
Know before you go
- Bring your driving licence. You need one to drive the snowmobile; passengers do not.
- Book single rider if you want your own machine. The fare assumes two people per snowmobile.
- Get to the BSÍ terminal yourself. The coach does not collect from hotels on this fare.

Does the price cover one person or two?
The fare is per person, and two people share one snowmobile. If you want a machine to yourself, book the single-rider option.
Do I need a driving licence?
Yes, to drive the snowmobile. A passenger does not need one, so a pair can share the driving or not.
How old do children have to be?
Children from five can join, one child per adult. It is not suitable for wheelchair users.
What if the weather closes the glacier?
The snowmobile ride can be cancelled after the coach has left Reykjavík. If it is, you receive a full refund.
Is there a way to walk on a glacier instead?
